Because of their small size it was said that the Mercury spacecraft capsules were worn, not ridden. The Mercury capsule was just large enough for the single crew member, inside it had 120 controls: 55 electrical switches, 30 fuses and 35 mechanical levers. The Redstone Rocket was used for Mercury suborbital flights, while the Atlas D rocket was used for the orbital flights of Project Mercury, both of these vehicles had originally been designed as ICBM's to carry warheads.
