The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is a state located in the Northeastern and Middle Atlantic regions of the United States. The state
borders Delaware and Maryland to the south, West Virginia to the southwest, Ohio to the west, New York and Ontario, Canada, to the north,
and New Jersey to the east. The state's four most populous cities are Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Allentown and Erie. The state capital is
Harrisburg.
The term "Dutch," when referring to the Pennsylvania Dutch, means "German" or "Teutonic" rather than "Netherlander." Germans, in their own
language, call themselves "Deutsch," which in English became, misleadingly, "Dutch." The Pennsylvania Dutch language is a descendant of
German, in the West Central German dialect family. Although it is still spoken as a first language among some Old Order Amish and Mennonites
(principally in the Lancaster County area), the language is almost extinct as an everyday language among the non-religious, though a few words
have passed into English usage.
